The Hack to Never Running Out of Outfit Ideas

by Kate Greenwood 31 Jul 2026 0 Comments

I hear this all the time from my friends and customers.

“I really struggle to put outfits together.”

“I feel like I’m wearing the same thing on repeat.”

And you know what? That’s completely normal. But sometimes you just want to freshen things up a little.

The biggest mistake I see people make is going straight out and buying more clothes. You jump on a trend, order a jumper that looks amazing online, it arrives… and then you realise you’ve got nothing to wear it with.

We’ve all done it, don’t worry.

Something I’ve learnt over the years is that it’s not really about how many clothes you have in your wardrobe, it’s about how you style them.

A bit rich coming from me, seeing as this is literally how I make a living…  But honestly, it’s true.

Before you go shopping up a storm on here (even though I’d absolutely love you to!), I want to be real with you.

It all starts with the basics already sitting in your wardrobe.

Strip it back. Build a great base. Once you’ve got those key pieces sorted, mixing and matching becomes so much easier, and you can quite literally create three completely different outfits from the same base.

So I’ve put together a list of winter wardrobe basics that I think everyone should have. The best part is they’ll carry you right through into spring too because, let’s be honest, spring can still be pretty chilly.

Your Capsule Wardrobe List

  • Basic tee (white and navy)

  • Long sleeve top (white and black, or cream and brown)

  • A mix of four jumpers (think black, navy, grey and cream)

  • Light wash denim jeans

  • Mid wash denim jeans

  • Black denim jeans

  • Long wool coat (brown)

  • Cropped coat (charcoal or navy)

  • Classic blazer

  • Puffer coat (any colour!)

  • White sneakers

  • Black boots

  • Brown Chelsea boots or loafers

  • A pop of colour sneakers (maybe red?)

Trust me, I think you’ll be surprised how many of these you already own. They’re probably just hiding behind all those newer purchases you’ve barely worn.

Pull them back out, start mixing and matching, and once you’ve got that sorted… that’s when the real fun starts.

Now Add Your Accessories

This is the bit I could talk about all day.

Once you’ve got your basics sorted, building your accessories collection is so much easier than people think. And the best part is it’ll look completely different for everyone because we all have our own style.

Start with a few pops of colour and personality.

A scarf in a colour you love. A pair of earrings you can throw on without even thinking on a busy morning. Then slowly build from there. A bracelet stack here, a statement necklace there… whatever feels like you.

Same Base, Completely Different Looks

To show you what I mean, I recently styled the exact same white shirt and the exact same pair of jeans two completely different ways. No new clothes were bought or harmed in the process.

Why It’s Worth It

This is what I love most about building your wardrobe this way.

You actually end up buying less, not more, because you’re wearing and enjoying everything you already own.

A beautiful scarf can completely change five different outfits.

A great pair of earrings works with almost everything in your wardrobe.

That’s a lot more value than buying another trend piece you’ll wear twice before it disappears to the back of the cupboard.

So before you add another jumper to your cart, have a proper look through your wardrobe first.

I reckon your next favourite outfit is probably already in there… it might just need the right accessories to bring it to life.

I’d love to know… what’s the one wardrobe basic you always reach for?
